At 00.03am on Tuesday (30) crews from Kempston, Bedford, Sandy, Ampthill, Toddington and Leighton Buzzard were called to a fire involving 19 cars at a commercial property in Kiln Road, Kempston Hardwick.
The car that initially caught light was approximately 20 years old and it is believed that the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the engine bay. CCTV footage indicated the fire started low down in the area of the car battery.
In total there were 19 cars significantly damaged or fully destroyed by fire and a further 6 damaged by heat. No electric cars were involved in this incident except for one which was parked nearby and suffered some heat damage (one of the 6)
Due to the close proximity of the parked cars, once the fire started it spread quickly and Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used four hose reels and other jets to extinguish the fire.
The scene was left with onsite staff and police.
This was an Accidental fire. Police and Fire investigations ruled out deliberate ignition.
