Public consultations
We occasionally ask the public and stakeholders for their views and opinions on changes we're proposing to the way the Service works.
Council Tax Precept Consultation
One of the ways the fire service is funded is through council tax precepts. Each year, the Fire Authority will seek the views of the public regarding its plans for council tax precept.
Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Authority (FRA) was limited to a 2.99% increase in council tax for the 2024/25 financial year, which was supported by public consultation and approved in February 2024. For the 2025/26 financial year, the Government has confirmed the FRA can raise council tax by up to £5. This would increase the annual Band D charge for the fire and rescue service from £112.72 to £117.72—an additional £5 per year, or 42p per month.
This increase would raise £1.1 million, which would help protect and invest in Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Every pound counts; it costs approximately £1.2 million a year to keep a fire engine crewed and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
