BFRS exceed targets for home fire safety visits for the vulnerable
The most vulnerable residents in Bedfordshire are receiving targeted support from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS), recent data shows.
The Service has made significant strides in delivering high-quality services to disabled and elderly residents as part of a newly implemented strategy for home fire safety visits (HFSV), performance reports released this week show, with BFRS not only exceeding overall visit targets but also prioritising those most at risk.
From July to September of this year, 76 per cent of all HFSVs were provided to elderly and/or disabled individuals, with a total of 1,245 visits out of 1,637 delivered to those identified as most vulnerable. This represents a significant increase in support for high-risk groups, aligning with the Service’s strategy to ensure that resources are focused where they are needed most.
Rob Hulatt, Head of Prevention and Protection, said: "This year, our prevention team has made significant progress in delivering HFSVs to those in our local communities who are vulnerable. Exceeding our targets for visits to the elderly and disabled highlights the positive impact our team is having in the communities we serve. By implementing advanced risk assessment strategies and ensuring that our resources are targeted where they will have the most benefit, we are reducing fire risks for those who need it most. Our commitment to making homes safer for everyone remains stronger than ever."
A HFSV is designed to not only provide vital safety advice but also to target households that present the highest risk of fire. Using a sophisticated risk stratification methodology, performance indicators have been set to monitor progress toward key goals for 2024/25. Based on these metrics, an average total risk score has been determined for each operational crew and Home Safety Advisor team.
The HFSV programme continues to focus on adapting its strategies to meet the needs of the most vulnerable, and future initiatives will build upon this success to further enhance the safety of households across the region.
BFRS offers free home fire safety visits to those over 65 who live alone or might be vulnerable. A member of the team will give advice on smoke alarms, escape routes, safer cooking and slips, trips and falls. To find out more or make a referral visit: Homepage | Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service
