Conduct and Commendations recognised at fire awards

COLLEAGUES and their families of Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) were celebrated at an awards ceremony yesterday (Wednesday 27 March).
The Long Service Good Conduct and Chief’s Awards, held at Cranfield University, recognised the outstanding contributions and achievements of BFRS staff, highlighting their commitment to the communities they serve.
The family-friendly event welcomed 100 people to Mitchell Hall, Cranfield, to celebrate seven 20 and two 25-year long service medals and certificates, as well as awards of the Chief Fire Officer.
The Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Mrs Susan Lousada, awarded 20-year Long Service and Good Conduct medals under Royal Warrant, alongside Chief Fire Officer Andy Hopkinson.
Chief Fire Officer Andy Hopkinson said: “The awards we celebrated last night highlighted the unwavering dedication and commitment of individuals to our Service and to their communities. To be able to honour long serving colleagues and also to award my own commendations in one evening was really quite humbling. We have truly incredible people working in our fire service and the stories of bravery, compassion and courage we heard reflect just how committed our colleagues are to looking after the communities of Bedfordshire.”
The Chief’s Commendation is awarded to crews, teams or individuals for acts of special bravery, recognition of outstanding service, or for recognition of a task that brings credit on themselves and reflects on the Service as a whole. Last night, there were six awards, including stories of life-saving acts, care of children at traumatic times, quick-thinking action of off-duty personnel, and calming activity in critical situations.
When an individual or team goes above and beyond, through either special project work, or through professional acts that are at a level above the rest, their work can be acknowledged through a letter of appreciation. Eight recipients last night included standout individuals who led major incidents, who made decisions at incidents that resulted in lives being saved, and who worked on significant reports.
Fire and Rescue Authority Chair, Cllr Jacqui Burnett, added: "It gives me immense pride to recognise the achievements of so many of our colleagues and the years of commitment shown by those receiving long service awards is truly inspiring and fills me with joy."
