False alarms are the most common type of incident attended with an average of 2,604 incidents attended per year over the five-year period.

  • Attendance to fire false alarms in dwellings has an increasing trend over the five-year period, with a 15% increase in 2022-23 from the previous year alone. This accounts for the highest number of false alarm attendances
  • The property types of purpose-built flats shows a proportionally higher increase in false alarms attended over the five-year period
  • Attendances to dwellings in response to Automatic Fire Detector (AFD) which were found to be fires decreased by 21% compared to the previous year and by 60% compared to the five-year average
  • Attendance to AFD false alarms ‘due to apparatus’ decreased in 2022-23 compared to the high figure from 2021-22 but remains above the five-year average
  • The most common reason recorded for both false alarm due to apparatus and good intent fire false alarm is smoke/condensation
  • Malicious false alarms saw a substantial drop in 2020-21 but these have returned to prior values with a five year average of 91 – so the dip is likely to be COVID-related
